The neutral gas content of X-ray bright elliptical galaxies

چکیده
Sensitive CO observations are presented for a sample of elliptical galaxies which are luminous X-ray and weak far infrared (FIR) emitters. Only non-detections were obtained. The absence of detectable amounts of CO (this includes the previously ‘detected’ prototypical galaxy NGC4472) does not support those standard cooling flow scenarios in which dust grain sputtering reduces the FIR luminosity, while cooled down gas is forming a significant mass of dense molecular gas.

The Identi cation of Quasars Behind Elliptical Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies
The detection of resonance absorption lines against known objects such as individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies is a powerful approach for studying the gas content of these systems. We describe an e cient method of identifying background quasars suitable for absorption line studies. In this nding technique, we identify serendipitous X-ray sources, about 1/8 of which are suitably bright q...

متن کاملFeedback and environmental effects in elliptical galaxies
The role of the environment of an elliptical galaxy on its hot interstellar gas is discussed. In general, the X-ray halos of early-type galaxies tend to be smaller and fainter in denser environments, with the exception of group-central galaxies. X-ray observations show many examples of nearby galaxies which are undergoing gas stripping. On the other hand, most bright galaxies in clusters do man...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملCooling Flow Models of the X–ray Emission and Temperature Profiles for a Sample of Elliptical Galaxies
A simple spherically-symmetric, steady-state, cooling-flow description with gas loss (following Sarazin & Ashe 1989), within galaxy models constrained by radially extended stellar dynamical data, is shown to provide generally reasonable fits to the existing data on X-ray emission profiles and temperatures for a set of bright elliptical galaxies in Virgo and Fornax. Three free parameters are nee...
